Justin Bieber got some sage advice from another former child star, New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre. The youngest member of NKOTB, and 24-year veteran in the music business, recently spoke about the 16-year-old Bieber in an ‘Entertainment Tonight‘ interview.
In talking about Bieber, McIntyre, 38, who had his own experience shooting to fame at such a young age, warned the young singer about some of the pitfalls of huge stardom at this age.
“You gotta learn how to hang in there and know that there’s so much more to life than just singing pop tunes and dancing around on stage,” says McIntyre. “And that takes a while. Everybody’s got their own path and their own time. You have to go with the flow and learn some things the hard way.”
When the New Kids on the Block shot to stardom in 1987, McIntyre was only 13 years old and found it difficult to deal with the stardom, particularly when the group’s success waned after years on top. “I wasn’t perfect,” says McIntyre. “We weren’t perfect. We certainly made mistakes, and there were dark days. You’re the biggest thing in the world (but) you gotta come down. What goes up comes down, for whatever reason.”
McIntyre adds that it’s possible for kids to maintain their sanity and success with the right people in their lives. “Hopefully, kids like Justin … there’s a lot of young artists out there, and hopefully they’ve got good family around them and they’re able to take the ups and downs.”
